[12.7.50] Gallus a castratione vocatus; inter ceteras enim aves huic solo testiculi adimuntur. Veteres enim abscisos gallos vocabant. Sicut autem a leone leaena et a dracone dracaena, ita a gallo gallina. Cuius membra, ut ferunt quidam, si auro liquescenti misceantur, consumi.
Gallus a castratione uocatus, inter caeteras enim aues huic solo testiculi adimuntur. Veteres enim ab scisos gallos uocabant, sicut autem a leone leena, a dracone dracena, ita a gallo gallina. Gallus uirum sanctum aut doctorem euangelicum significat, qui sub caligine istius mundi positus futuram lucem uitae aeternae prenuntiat. De quo per Salomonem dicitur: Gallus accinctus nec est rex qui resistat ei. Et in Iob: Quis dedit in quid gallo intellegentiam. Item in aliam partem gallus ponitur, ut est illud Isaiae: Asportari te faciam sicut asportatur gallus gallinatius. Gallina significat sapientiam siue sanctam ecclesiam seu animam iustam, ut est illud dominicum testimonium ad Hierusalem: Quotiens uolui congregare filios tuos quem ad modum gallina congregat pullos suos sub alas suas et noluisti.
